Venture 4.0: The Purge Before the Renaissance
Venture’s Hard Reset Begins

I can feel it…the realities of Venture 4.0 are coming.
The VC swagger is gone. The name-drops and humblebrags have given way to darting eyes, anxious laughter, and conversations circling the void.
The purge is coming. Our prediction that 50% of the 6,175 VC firms would evaporate is starting to feel optimistic. (That’s already down from over 8,300 in 2021)
The tells are obvious:
→ In H1 2025, the top 30 US firms captured nearly three-quarters of all capital
→ Anemic exits post-2022 drive DPI to a 14-year trough
→ Beyond the aggregators and proven GPs, emerging managers struggle to
Here’s the upside: when the money drains, so does mediocrity. What’s left is a tighter, healthier market. Sharper firms backing stronger companies at reasonable prices. Quality by necessity.
Those who survive the Dark Ages will thrive in the Tech Renaissance. Survivors won’t just be alive, they’ll be advantaged. Some incredible VC vintages will be born.
Here’s what it takes to earn a seat at the Venture 4.0 table:
→ Structural Advantage. Words on a page don’t cut it anymore. The herd adopts quickly. What you can’t fake is real differences that create competitive advantages. Think founder mafias, corporate connectivity, celebrity following, proven incubation, and cross-border teams. Anything that makes your fund meaningfully different, not just descriptively unique; differentiated and durable advantages.
→ Focus. The trail is littered with dead sector-specific funds. At the same time, generalists struggle to differentiate. Finding your way between these endpoints requires thesis-driven conviction, deep understanding of the subject matter, and powerful expert networks.
As firms look inward and ask themselves what their right to exist is, expect to see shotgun partnerships, consolidations, and GP shuffles.
Godspeed to those tying rocks together. It’s the durable, proven foundations that will survive and thrive.
Venture 4.0 will punish the weak. But it will also reward the strong. And for those who adapt, scarcity isn’t a threat, it’s the moat.
